Have you ever felt discouraged from pursuing your dreams? Has
someone told you, “You can’t do that?” Well, I certainly have. I
faced resistance and doubt from someone I loved and respected for much of my
life. This is how I defied expectations, embraced my choices, and discovered a
life filled with unexpected adventures.
The Looking Glass: From joining the Army against my
parents’ wishes to becoming a long-haul trucker, I’ve always followed my heart,
even when it led me down unconventional paths. Each time I announced a new
ambition, I was met with the same refrain: “You can’t do that!”
Joining the Army: My escape from a factory job and
beginning a life of independence.
Caring for Special Needs Boys: A
rewarding job that taught me empathy and resilience.
Becoming a Trucker: Crisscrossing the country,
proving that women can conquer any road.
Writing and Publishing: My surprise success as a writer,
even though I was “born and raised on a farm.”
Joining the Army Reserves: A second tour of duty,
proving that passion can strike twice.
The Turning Point: One afternoon, while searching
for a box of old pictures at my mother’s house, I stumbled upon a shocking
revelation. Tucked between the pages of her Bible were slips of paper with my
name and dates. These were the times my mother had her lawyer remove me from
her will for disobeying her.
At first, I was hurt and confused. But then, I couldn’t help
but laugh. I’d never wanted anything from her except maybe a little
encouragement.
The realization hit me: I had lived a rich and fulfilling
life, all without any inheritance.
As I hugged my mother goodbye that day, she made a surprising
confession: She’d always wanted to join the military, but her father wouldn’t
let her.
Moral of the Story: Don’t let anyone dim your light or define
your limits. You can achieve anything you set your mind to. Embrace your
dreams, even if they seem unconventional, and remember, the only limitations
are the ones you place on yourself.
